Ionic Molecules

Ionic and Covalent bonds are the two different types of bonds that hold atoms together, each having their own characteristics. The distance and charge determines the type of bond the molecules have. These bonds occur because atoms strive to obtain the ideal valence of 8. Some atoms need to gain or lose electrons in order to achieve the ideal valence. In a covalent bond, the electrons are being pulled by two atoms that are both nonmetals. In other words, the two atoms are sharing electrons, but not all covalent bonds are shared equally.
Within covalent bonds, there are nonpolar and polar covalent bonds. In nonpolar covalent bonds, the electrons are shared equally or very closely. In polar covalent bonds, one atom has a greater attraction for

Unknown partially dissolved, and unknown 1 had not dissolved at all in the distilled water. In ethanol, none of the substances had dissolved. Unknown 3 melted the quickest at 10 seconds and the solution turned transparent. At 20 seconds, unknown 4 melted. Both unknown 1 and 2 had not melted. Unknown 2 burned and turned black at 30 seconds while vapor began to form on the sides of the tube, for unknown 1, at 30 seconds. During the conductivity test, the conductivity for unknown 1, 2, and 3 were all very high with very bright red and medium green, so it was a 4 according to the scale. The conductivity of unknown 4 was low with a dim red and no green lit up, so it was 1 on the scale. For the boiling point test, unknown 2 and 4 started to bubble slightly at 1 minute then 2 turned blue at 3 minutes. 1, 2, 3, and 4 began to steam at 3 min and 30 seconds. 3 started to bubble at 4 minutes. 1 began evaporating at 5 minutes and 2 and 3 began at 6 minutes. Unknown 1 boiled at 100 degrees celsius at 8 minutes, 2 boiled at 101 degrees celsius at 13 minutes, 3 boiled at 100.2 degrees celsius at 10 minutes, and 4 boiled at 98 degrees celsius at 9 minutes and 30

The experiment that I am doing is to see if the water temperature affects the reaction time of an Alka-Seltzer explosion. I believe that it will affect the time of how fast the CO2 builds up because the faster it builds up, the quicker the reaction and therefore the explosion comes faster. Alka-Seltzer is a drug that is used for heartburn and indigestion relief, along with many other things. When Alka-Seltzer was first introduced, it was advertised in comics in the newspaper in 1931.…

Magnesium start to turn into a white liquid form. After the bubble start to disappear, more Hydrochloric acid was added, and the reactions repeats. Until none of the shiny silver Magnesium ribbon can be seen, and there is no more bubble, the reaction is over.…

The conductivity of the unknown yielded good results in that a solution of water and the unknown compound conducted current twice as well as water alone (Table 2). The average resistance of pure water was 0.0998 mega-ohms and 0.0526 mega-ohms for the solution of the unknown compound and water. To further identify properties, five reactions were carried out with the unknown compound and the known compound and the results were compared. These five reactions included mixing the unknown with an acid, a base, two with salts, and one that was known to create a precipitate. The same reactions were carried out with the known.…

This is completed by taking 1mL of the unknown solution and placing it within a test tube, then adding 1mL of 6 M HNO3 and 1mL of AgNO3 and stirring with a glass rod for 10 seconds to observe the formation of a precipitate in the chloride ion test. For the sulfate test, this is completed by taking 1mL of the unknown solution and placing it within a test tube, then adding 1mL of 6 M HCl and 1mL of BaCl2 and stirring with a glass rod for 10 seconds to observe the formation of a precipitate. Following the Anion Tests are the Cation Tests in which we find the flame test and the ammonium test. For the flame test, a nichrome wire is cleaned by dipping it into HNO3 and burning it on a Bunsen burner until the resulting flame is colorless. After the wire has been cleaned, a small portion of the unknown compound is placed on the wire and held over the flame until a color can be recorded.…

In contrast, a molecular compound (a covalent substance) is very different from ionic compounds. A molecular compound is a pure substance formed from two or more non-metals that are made up of molecules, and joined together by covalent bonds, which are bonds that result from sharing valence electrons between non-metal atoms. In addition, molecular compounds are soft, gases or liquids at room temperature. They also have lower melting points than ionic compounds, and when dissolved or melted, they become non-electrolyte solutions that do not conduct…

The conductivity probe read 305.1 μS/cm when Sodium Chloride was tested. When Potassium Bromide was tested the probe read 306.2 μS/cm. Sodium Chloride and Potassium Bromide are conductive in water because they are ionic compounds. Ionic compounds are able to dissociate into ions and, the ions are able to carry charge through the solution (water). The relative melting point of Sodium Chloride and Potassium Bromide were tested two different ways, expressing that Sodium Chloride and Potassium Bromide have a relatively high melting point.…

After starting with 30 mL of an unknown mixture of two solvents, fractional distillation and gas chromatography were used to identify the unknowns as acetone and toluene in a 1 to 2.04 ratio of acetone to toluene. Fractional distillation was first used to separate the unknown mixture into its components based on boiling point. Distillation refers to the method of separating components of a mixture through heating and cooling. Simple distillation, which is especially useful in the separation of less-volatile substances from volatile substances, such as sugar from water, can be used to separate a liquid-liquid mixture if the boiling points of the component liquids differ by more than 40-50°C. A plot of temperature versus volume for a simple…

When calculating the quantitative solubility of the unknown compound in water, the amount of water that was measured in the hydrated cylinder and poured into the flask could have been greater than expected. This is more likely than less water being used because more solute was needed to saturate the solution than expected. Another error that could have occurred during this part of the experiment was that too much of the unknown compound was added accidently to the solution than could dissolve. Most of the error in this lab occurred during the quantitative analysis since all of the percent yields of the precipitate were over 100%. This miscalculation could have been caused by the beakers not being washed out thoroughly between each reaction or by the mass of KCl measured on the electronic scale being greater than exactly 0.5 grams.…
