This excerpt is from Scene III of Oedipus Rex by Sophocles and begins right after Oedipus finds out he may not be Polybus’ son. Iocaste is trying to convince Oedipus to forget about finding his true lineage. Iocaste is trying to keep Oedipus from knowing the now obvious truth while Oedipus continues to be ignorant of what the facts point to. Iocaste is the heroine of Oedipus Rex because although she knows what Oedipus has done, she decides that she would rather live with the secret than see her son and husband be cast away and humiliated. But, as she is trying to convince Oedipus to forget about the whole matter, Oedipus is too selfish to let go which ruins Iocaste’s attempts to save him. Her call to adventure was when she and King __ received a prophecy from the Oracle at Delphi. At this point she receives a helper, the shepherd, who helps her with her first test. But before starting her first test she crosses a mental threshold. Iocaste has to give up her son in order to save her husband, which is a big step for anyone to do. By doing this Iocaste shows her strength and willingness to do what she thinks is right, which is the “pain(7)” Iocaste mentions to Oedipus. Iocaste first test is giving baby Oedipus up, her second test is marrying Oedipus. Iocaste’s nadir is keeping Oedipus and Thebes from the prophecy for a while. If Oedipus understood the signs Iocaste gave and didn’t just assume “the Queen, like a woman, is perhaps ashamed/To think of my low origin(28-29)” Thebes may have saved from every knowing the prophecy was fulfilled. The other mental threshold that Iocaste has to cross is realizing there is nothing she can do to keep Oedipus from knowing the truth since he insists that “the truth must be made known(12).” Although Oedipus is not saved from knowing his fate was fulfilled, Iocaste was able to save him and Thebes for a while, which is her elixir for the world. Her elixir is that Oedipus and Thebes are saved for a while because of her

In the process of solving the enigma, Oedipus and Iocaste often speak about their prophesied fates. Oedipus claims that his foretold future is that he “should lie with [his] own mother” and be his “father’s murderer” (Sophocles 42). Similarly, Iocaste reveals that Apollo had told them that their child will “kill his father” then marry his mother (Sophocles 38). Although these two characters do not know that they are mother and son, the audience is well aware that they have fulfilled their destiny. This creates suspense that engages the reader because they know that the secret will come out, but are still left in the dark on how and when it will happen.…

Oedipus has shown clear determination in trying to avoid the prophecy as mentioned by the messenger of Corinth, “(Oedipus) Apollo told me once—it is my fate—I must make love to my own mother, shed my father’s blood with my own hands. So for years I’ve given Corinth a wide berth…” (Lines 1182-1188) The Great Apollo, the god of prophecy himself has given old Oedipus the bad news, yet Oedipus refused to believe it as reality and boldly chose to fight the great prophecy. Success or failure, it does not change the fact that he had the courage and will to defy a god just to avoid the very fate that brought him here…

“‘When you say Man,’...‘you include women too’” (Rukeyser 10-1). In several points of history, women are expected to fit certain characteristics, but there are some women who do not. A lot of the time, women break expectations set for them through their ultimate actions. This is what makes them unlike men; their ability to defy standards set for them surpasses that of a man who is already expected to do great things.…

This story really has an interesting plot; it unfolds as Oedipus becomes king of Thebes, a king whose hubris and hamartia makes him more ignorant and blind to the truth about his fate the gods had sealed for him. However, Oedipus doesn’t immediately believe the truth that he, himself, is the murderer, even after he forces Teiresias, who has never lied before and by all accounts is never wrong, to tell him. He in fact, becomes angry with Teiresias because he believes Teresias is lying and in league with Jocaste’s brother, Creon. This demonstrates Oedipus’s hubris, his excessive pride, because he is unwilling to listen to those who have always been faithful and honest simply because he does not like the tone and content of the anwser. It is at this point where the irony of Tiresias 's literal blindness and Oedipus’s figurative blindness is put “out there where we’ll find it.” (Foster) Tiresias is obviously telling the truth, as he always has, and is definitely not in league with Creon, as Oedipus suggests.…

He believes that Oedipus can be held responsible, because Oedipus tried to run away from the prophecy rather than inquiring about it. Perhaps it is Oedipus’s belief that he can evade the will of the gods and traveling to Thebes that caused the prophecy to be fulfilled. Or perhaps by trying to learn more about the prophecy, he could have delayed the events that are bound to take place. Whatever the case is, Oedipus should have worked at facing his fate rather than trying to escape it, and he can be held responsible for the…

Oedipus the King has remained a contentiously debated literary work for a multitude of reasons. Arguably, the most important debate encompassing this work relates to the relationship between how individuals exercise free-will and how fate, and sometimes the Gods, influence their actions and their lives. In an article of literary criticism, entitled Tampering With the Future: Apollo 's Prophecy in Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex by Christopher Nassaar, Nassaar focuses on how Oedipus fulfilled Apollo 's prophecy by doing everything he could to avoid it. In Nassar 's mind, Oedipus made the mistake of overreacting to Apollo’s prophecy as he “panics and rushes into catastrophe” (Nassaar 148). Oedipus realizes the extent to which his fate is horrendous,…
