Why is involuntary assessment and/or involuntary treatment considered to be a highly contested area of practice for social workers and other mental health clinicians?
Involuntary assessment/treatment is when someone with authority makes decisions for people without their consent or right. Involuntary assessment and treatment takes away the right for being people who are experiencing mental health issues. According to the code of ethics says that everyone has the right to make decisions for themselves and be able to take their own responsibility of issues. Chantelle said that she would like to do university things but feels unable to go to work. Client states that she is unable to sleep and finds it slow to sleep. Client is portraying as anxious by being agitated, shaky, unable to sit in chair. Chantelle appears to be quite withdrawn and tearful. Client has expressed thoughts of suicidal indentation. Mental illness can play a huge role in Chantelle’s life as research from indicates that mental illness can have impacts on education, employment, the relationships of an individual which can have determitnal outcomes for youth. (U’Ren, 2011). For Chantelle depression has dire outcomes for her because she is unable to go to work anymore. This has impacts on her ability because depression is very debilitating and has implications of many other aspects which can impact on her social, emotional and cognitive components which can dire implications on Chantelle’s financial security. Steadman and Taskila say that depression can lead to people facing stigma and discrimination in multiple levels of their life. (2015, p. 3). For Chantelle financial insecurity also has impacts to her housing situation because without being able to have money she may not be able to support herself this can be developed through housing as client and partner recently bought house so this could be a extra stressor for Chantelle while trying to cop. This means that social justice considers that housing is a basic human need therefore advocacy for people is important as goes with the social work values of respect, self-determination and autonomy. This is way there is a need for social inclusion
