I have gained more confidence when conversing with strangers and stating my point of view in public. Through various leadership experiences, I feel I have matured as a person because the characteristics I have learned have taught me how to contribute to society and be accountable for my actions. The concepts I have gained will assist me in working with diverse populations as represented on a college campus and in the community. NHS provided additional motivation to volunteer, but I have always maintained a passion for helping others. My first experience intermingling with my community was in my 7th grade year when I volunteered to perform a solo piece on the violin at the Delta Sigma Theta's “Jabbowock” Scholarship Pageant. The program provided me with the experience of celebrating the beauty and accomplishments of fellow young, African-American women. The pageant was a magnificent display of the appreciation of youth, and I am thankful I was able to participate. My passion for the violin has also granted me the experience to play at church events as well. For example, I performed as a soloist at the historic Voices of Praise Baptist Church Black History Program and with the St. John Missionary Baptist Church Orchestra.
