I have been able to interact with patients and other healthcare providers by participating in community service projects. For example, we were able to reach out to underserved communities and provide immunizations and blood pressure screenings. As a first-year pharmacy student, I was able to help with giving flu shots since I got certified to immunize this semester. In Foundations of Pharmacy, I was able to observe and understand what a profession in pharmacy would look like for me for there are lots of careers a pharmacist can pursue. In IPECS, I enjoyed being able to learn together with students of other professions, this helped defined our attitudes and good behaviors as well as build relationships professionally. The simulations in IPECS also contributed towards professionalism because it helped me learn new skills and trained me to be a professional in a pharmacy practice setting. One of my favorite courses is IPPE, I feel like I am putting into practice all that I have learned as a P1.
Leadership
With regards to leadership, I have been engaged in a student organization that has given me the opportunity to enhance my leader skills. During some of our events, I was able to lead by setting up tables before everyone shoed up and making sure everything was in order when we left. I have also taken some leadership roles in the student organization by contributing towards the diabetes initiative and will be serving as service chair in the Knoxville campus next year.
