Introduction Intravenous infusion therapy is an infusion of fluids directly into the patient’s bloodstream via a vein using an intravenous catheter. It is frequently used in hospital settings for patients that require a rapid onset of medication and for those who are unable to receive medications orally. According to Adams and Urban (2012), intravenous (IV) infusion is considered to be the most dangerous route of receiving medications because medication cannot be retrieved once it enters the bloodstream. IV Fluids Administration and Complications IV fluids are non-medicated fluids, but it can play a large role in patient’s recovery. Adams and Urban (2012), stated that IV fluid therapy is needed when a patient is at risk for dehydration due to vomiting, diarrhea, excessive sweating, severe burns, bleeding and extreme diuresis to due diuretic therapy. When there is an imbalance between fluid intake and output, the human body can go into shock and loss of electrolytes (p. 568). When IV fluid therapy is administered to treat volume deficit disorders in a safe and controlled setting, not only does it help maintain blood pressure and prevent the lost of electrolytes, but it can also prevent fluid overload which is a serious complication of fluid administration. The hard limit is the maximum allow dose or rate cannot be overridden however, the soft limit or the minimum allowed dose and rate can be overridden depending on the need of the patients.
