It is frequently used in hospital settings for patients that require a rapid onset of medication and for those who are unable to receive medications orally. According to Adams and Urban (2012), intravenous (IV) infusion is considered to be the most dangerous route of receiving medications because medication cannot be retrieved once it enters the bloodstream. Hard and soft limits are predetermining dose and rate parameters that alert the clinicians when the ordered dose is not within the set limits. The hard limit is the maximum allow dose or rate cannot be overridden however, the soft limit or the minimum allowed dose and rate can be overridden depending on the need of the patients. Two of the IV safe infusions pumps used in clinical practice today are the Alaris and B Braun IV safety infusion pumps. Within each company there are many different types of pumps available such as Ambulatory infusion pumps, large volume pumps, PCA/PCEA pumps and syringe pumps. For this research paper, the focus will be on the large volume infusion pump
