Why did the children need to work?
The main cause that children needed to work was poverty, no one had enough money for the household and a child’s money could be 25 till 40% of all the money they received. The factory owner was strict but the parents also needed the children’s money because otherwise they had no food and they would starve. Another big cause is the fact that the children had nothing to do. There was no school they could go to or any sport club. It was also in our benefit because children were easier to handle and you could pay them less. They were not forced to so they did not need to work. They also already worked before the industrial revolution as soon as the parents found work for them but there was not a lot of work. When factories established there was more work available so more children could work. Most of the time the children started working in factories when they were 8,5 years old.
What dangerous jobs did the children do?
