In the Healthcare setting it is necessary for nurses to create a therapeutic relationship with clients to show respect and trust (Rosenberg & Gallo-Silver 2011, p. 2). There are many methods as to communicate in a therapeutic way however only the interpersonal communication method will be discussed as to how to build and develop it. When assessing a patient this communication method may assist in gathering objective and subjective data which will also be discussed. (2015 pp. 513-514) states that to gain this data, the health professional must use verbal communication such as pace and intonation to suit the patient, Simplicity if necessary, clarity and brevity, timing and relevance, adaptability, credibility and humor where appropriate. Nonverbally, healthcare professionals may use personal appearance, posture and gait, facial expressions and gestures to gather the objective and subjective data needed. During the examination barriers may prevent healthcare professionals from gaining the accurate data which may include the developmental level of the patient, their culture, beliefs and physical condition (Weber & Kelley 2014, pp. 148-149). Furthermore gender, personal space, roles and relationships, environment, congruence and interpersonal attitudes also may affect the collection of the data states Kozier et al. (2015 pp. 517-518).
