A great deal of individuals use these hours for social media. Mindlessly scrolling to glimpse if anything is new, and or interesting appears. Homework, chores, and athletic actives are deprived of their time due to social media existence. “The average person has five social media accounts and spends around 1 hour and 40 minutes browsing these networks every day, accounting for 28pc of the total time spent on the internet” (Davidson). This hourly time fluctuates for every person, but many individuals find themselves in a trance when going on social media. It is an easy escape from life that excludes independent thought, and is just as simple as moving their finger from the up to the down position. “…High school teachers on average assign about 17.5 hours of homework each week” (Bidwell). If students continue to use social media as much as they do or even more, they have less time to do their assigned work. They would have even less time to spend on sport activities, and sleep. People do not think that social media steals their time, but little do they realize almost every night they are up for 30 minutes or more scrolling when they could be sleeping. “90% of 18-29 year olds sleep with their smartphones” (Blodget). This means that these individuals have a higher chance of losing sleep due to distraction than anything else. With the ability to spread news quickly plenty of people get caught up in that world and lose their touch with reality. They become glued to who they are in the social world, than who they are in the real world. While sharing pictures are nice, an adequate amount of sleep, safety of others, and being realistic with one’s self is a better way to spend one’s time. When a phone is able to prevent people to look up while traveling a direction, than the phone has to much control over an individual’s life.
