I first had to come up with multiple lists of top ten things I had strong opinions about. I then would pick one thing from one list and write about it. I chose to write about why humans need drinks and how it was important. Even though I got an eighty one percent on the essay, I still had quite a few errors in it. Looking over the graded essay I could not help but notice some simple mistakes such as spelling and grammar. Some things I struggled with were transitioning into a new paragraph, repeating phrases, and getting to my main idea in the essay. Another thing I learned was how to be better at picking good transition words between sentences and paragraphs. I am very grateful for being put into Mr. Rase’s Intermediate Composition because he made the learning environment very comfortable to be in and he made learning fun. The class was good for me because it exposed me to new things that I have never really tried before. For example, writing a definition essay. I never once wrote one of those until this year and if you were to ask me what a definition essay was, I would think that you would use vocab terms. Looking over all the work that I have done in the class I did notice that my skills with detail have gotten better along with creating better introductions to stories. Going back to what I said previously in this portfolio, in one of my essays I forgot to change the title. Changing the title was probably the simplest mistakes I made this year. One thing that seems to be consistently average or poor is my grammar. Grammar has not been the best but I can still practice it. And when I am referring to grammar, I am talking about my use of punctuation, phrases, uses of words, etc. When putting together this portfolio, it basically forced me to look at my previous writings and look at how I improved as a writer.
