Intergender wrestling involves mixed gender, professional matches where both men and women can participate. On top of single matches, intergender wrestling may also involve tag teams that consist of both men and women.
However, these tag teams are quite different from what people normally know to be mixed tag teams. In the latter tag teams, male and female wrestlers may not attack each other. Additionally, when the tag is initiated, the other team must also switch players so that the gender of the competitors remains the same. This is a popular method of tag team wrestling that still remains prevalent today. Intergender tag teams, on the other hand, allow men and women to compete against one another. This means that they are allowed direct contact with one another during the match.

People found the dynamics between male and female competitors to be unequal. However, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, entertainer Andy Kaufman changed the norm by calling himself an “intergender champion” and challenged any female wrestler to dethrone him. Kaufman eventually went through a well-known feud against Jerry Lawler, a situation every popular professional wrestler seems to encounter at least once.
By the mid-1990s, intergender wrestling had become a lot more popular, even sprouting championships and tournaments. One of the top female wrestlers who still remains well-known today is Chyna, who frequently chose to fight against men instead of women. In fact, she won several titles while fighting against men during her career.
