• Define interest groups
Interest groups are groups of people who share the same political interest and try to influence political parties to adopt the same interests. They give unrepresented or underrepresented groups the opportunity to get their voices herd. Often time’s interest groups offer wealthy and powerful interest even more access to political makers. According to the disturbance theory groups form because of changes happening in the political system. Every interest group consist of 3 different kinds of members, the first tear devotes all of their time and effort into the group, the second tier members do the most work; they attend meetings, pay dues and chair committees to see things get done, the third tear have the least participation …show more content…
Economic groups seek economic advantages, private goods, which will benefit their members. Noneconomic groups seek benefits that will not only affect their members but also the rest of society; purpose, solidarity and informational benefits. Business groups promote the interest of big corporations seeking benefits to better their companies such as tax cuts, regulatory changes and other changes that would benefit the company economically. Labor groups work with employers to try to increase wages and to improve working conditions for all workers. Agricultural groups protect farmers and their crops, large amounts of money contributed to the agricultural groups comes from the the government in order to be protected from prices raises and crop grows. Single issues groups work on only one issue, an example of a single issue group is the National Rifle Association who fights to regulate gun control. Ideological groups work to change cultural values and stereotypes. Government groups represent the interest of the government, city and state.
There are three said theories as to why interest groups gave flourished in the Unites States; pluralist, disturbance and transition theory. Pluralist theory says that “political power is distributed among a wide range of diverse and competing interest groups”. Disturbance theory says that interest groups form because of the changes that happen in the political system.
