The occurrence of a negative impact through human or natural efforts that leads to human suffering is known as a disaster. In the profession of nursing, a disaster is dealt with in a holistic manner. There is no one single approach to helping an individual that has just faced a natural disaster. It can be a very devastating time for a person who is faced with this situation. The interdisciplinary approach amongst health care workers is known as disaster management. Disaster management allows for preparedness in case of any tragic occurrence should occur. There is training in both communities and facilities that are offered in order for people to stay up-to-date with important information on how best to be ready in case a disaster should occur.
A study that was conducted in 2014, Preparing for disasters: Education and management strategies explored, discusses the importance of disaster planning being in the nursing school curriculum. Disaster planning is a vital competency that all nurses should possess. A disaster can happen at any time in any part of the world. The study emphasized how important it is to be competent in disaster management. Nursing schools, health care facilities, and people of the community were able to collaborate for the stimulation to take place because of the importance of the need. When everything fell into place for the study to go on, different factors were identified that were not apparent at first. The nurses involved in the study realized that they would have to make decisions based on quick critical thinking. Quick decisions about treating an injured individual would be done without knowing nothing about the patients’ medical history.
