Interdependent Work Relationships

According to the book, interdependent work relationships are required with virtual teams. When work teams are interdependent they share common goals and responsibilities. Also team members are self-motivated and reliant on themselves rather than others (Nelson, 2013). The book also states that communication effectiveness and stimulating work are two key human factors that determine the success or failure of virtual teams. Clarifying objectives is important when talking about the success of virtual teams. “I think clarifying the objectives along with different responsibilities and roles closely relates to responsibilities of management when it comes to team communication, alignment, and forming” (Earnhardt, 2009). Leadership is very important when it comes to a virtual team’s success. When a leader is not as effective as they should be teams may not meet their goals or objectives. Relationships can be damaged between the leader and the team members. Lack of clear responsibilities and roles can have a huge effect on virtual teams (Lepsinger, 2015). There can be problems if a team member doesn’t understand their individual roles. Lack of cooperation and engagement are also attributes that can cause a team to fail. Virtual teams are made up of mostly diverse cultures. Culture makes it difficult to freely speak one’s mind in some cases (Nelson, 2015). These cultures have their own beliefs, customs, and work habits. With members have their own customs and beliefs, this can be a challenge with members following their own way of working. According to MVT, “the use of one common language in the team creates a need for certain skills that can unify these differences based on a series of agreements (Advantages, 2015).” Miscommunication between the employees is challenge of cultural diversity on virtual teams. When dealing with different cultures sometimes there is a lack of understanding of other people’s culture. People tend to make assumptions of other people based on cultural identity. A lot of times with virtually teams, some people don’t understand what encompasses diversity in others. The importance on diversity is being open to diversity, and turning the conflicts that are had over ideas into positive outcomes.
