This paper aims at presenting a variety of cognitive skills fundamental for a standard paramedic. A good paramedic demonstrates expertise in critical thinking. This is evident in synthesis, a reflection of their learning and analysis of the implications for the professional studies. They should be able to apply reasoning skills to aid their clinical decisions. Besides that, paramedics must demonstrate an ability to create coherent arguments supported by analysis of data from a variety of sources. These professionals should also undertake a self-projected learning to develop the personal knowledge base to underpin professional development. Elsewhere, efficient use of information technology is necessary for paramedics and along with that are efficient information management, documentation and keeping records. Time management and prioritization are another core expectation of a paramedic. Closely related is the need for an anticipating paramedic to be adaptive and flexible in changing situations as well as consistency and self-motivation (Bo'meara & Grbich 2009). Effective role model, team worker, moral courage & integrity, professional and ethical values are core skills of an effective paramedic.
