The game has a water balloon inside and is on a timer. Players have to throw the ball around the circle and not be the one to have it when the timer goes off. In situations where intelligent disobedience is appropriate individuals needs to speak up and pass that refusal or disagreement on. If they do not, it becomes harder and harder because, like the game, people start to feel the pressure and sometimes panic if they have the ball and know the timer is about to go off but suddenly freeze because they do not know who to pass it to next. In an unethical situation, individuals know that it cannot go on forever and even begin to panic not wanting to be caught when the timer goes off. There have been cases of those involved in major scandals that have committed suicide or tried leaving the country in a moment of panic not knowing what to do or of someone wanting to blow the whistle but freezing and unable to decide who to tell.
It is important to teach intelligent disobedience early on and practice it often as Chaleff (2015) points out through his many examples. My son has a saying one of his teachers said, “If you don’t know don’t do it”, which can be brought into a workplace dilemma and can even be changed to “if you aren’t sure then get out”, which is what the WorldCom accountant should have
