This report will examine the Integrated Project Team Development (IPTD) the Naval Ship Maintenance Community uses to provide training to bridge the knowledge gap with the personnel of the ship and the civilian members of the shipyard. This process insures the project team is ready to support both long-range operational and maintenance commitments. “One important reason for an emphasis on teams is that participation in teams is fun for most people. There is something inherently attractive about engaging in teamwork “ (Whetten, 2015, p. 403). The goal of every team is to function as a high performing team. Close examination of the IPTD process shows that the aspects of the team development described by the PMBOK and other resources are met within the structure of the IPTD and its many stages. The first three stages of the IPTD builds upon the first four stages of team development. For example, IPTD 1 focuses on the invited members as they set their expectations for forming a team that is focused on completing the availability. During this process the team goes from the forming stage, storming and norming stages. IPTD 2 takes the integrated team, which has personnel added the project team formed in IPTD 1, and reinforces the first three stages of team development. Once IPTD 2 is complete the integrated project team is ready to perform at the expected levels required to complete an availability and thus they have reached the fourth stage or the performing stage. IPTD 3, like IPTD 2, builds upon the integrated project team and it uses the lessons learned from the other IPTDs to bring the lowest level of supervision into the project team. These steps are all part of the stage of team development.
The differences come in when you look at the storming stage and the steps of the IPTD. The conflict resolution that is described by the storming stage may be resolved in the IPTD but more than likely there will be personnel change by the start of the project and the team will go through the storming stage later or outside of the IPTD. This will require incoming personnel to assimilate to the group and for the project team to hear their voice and empower the new personnel to make
