1. Insulator is a material that does not transmit heat, sound or electricity from one end to another. It hinders the free flow of electrons from atom to atom and molecule to molecule. This is because the electrons are tightly bond to the atoms leaving no space for there to be any free electrons to transmit electrical energy. Examples of insulators are glass, rubber, wood and paper.
Conductor is an object or type of material that can transmit heat, sound, light or electricity. It does this by allowing electrons to flow freely from particle to particle. This is because the electrons can detach from their atoms and zip around, these are known as free electrons. The material having loose electrons makes it easy for electricity to slow through.

Resistors can also be used to provide a specific voltage for an active device such as a transistor. For a fixed temperature, the current flowing through a resistor is directly proportional to the voltage across the resistor. Formula to work out resistance is Voltage (V) = Current(I) × Resistance (R) and the SI unit is Ohms (Ω).
Inside the resistor there is an insulting ceramic rod running through the middle with copper wire wrapped around the outside. The number of copper turns controls the resistance and more copper turns and the thinner the copper, the higher the resistance. Resistance is caused when electrons collide with the atoms of the conductor, which makes it more difficult for the current to flow.
There are two major types of resistors, these are fixed and variable. Fixed resistors have a set value set when manufactured and these values can never be changed. Fixed resistors are further classified to Carbon composition type resistors, Metalized type resistors and Wire wound type resistors. Variable resistors can have their values adjusted without having to disconnecting the circuit. They usually have three leads, 2 fixed and one
