Writers tend to overthink their work which leads to a block being created. When approaching writing many of use take different routes, but more often than not we stress ourselves out trying to create perfect drafts. In “The Inspired Writer Vs. The Real Writer,” for example, Sarah Allen argues that writing is not a gift you are born with and if someone is determined to better their writing they must write without fear. Others such as Lennie Irvine agree, arguing In “What is Academic Writing?,” that there are many myths about writing that make it seem very structural, …show more content…
The Real Writer, says that enjoying writing is more of an “agonistic” type of thing. This means that it is not something you are obsessed with, it’s a love-hate relationship. This is important because it emphasizes that people don’t usually LOVE writing, it is more of a fire that burns inside them. “I believe that I write because I am driven to do so—driven by a will to write (Allen 25).” Basically, writing is not some kind of “gift from the gods” or natural talent. This means that writing is something you improve on, you aren’t born with this. This is important because it forces you to think that this is something you can get better at with time. “The best piece of advice I can give you, though, is to tell the Inspired Writer to shut up and let you write (Allen 41).” When you do this it helps to churn out a rough draft much easier. This relieves the pressure that is usually put on you when beginning to …show more content…
This means you should constantly be asking questions about ideas and intentions while reading. This is important because it helps you to understand the text and why it was written as well as how strong it is. “Reading like a writer can help you understand how the process of writing is a series of making choices, and in doing so, can help you recognize important decisions you might face and techniques you might want to use when working on your own writing (Bunn 75).” The strength of the text you are reading can help you improve your writing thoroughly. You should try to analyze the choices made in the text. This means approach the idea process while reading the text that the author used. This is important because it helps you analyze the ideas and see how you would think while writing while simultaneously absorbing information. This strategy can also help you to prevent mistakes when writing. “...so it can be helpful to look closely at the writing to try and get a sense of exactly what tripped you up. This way you can learn to avoid those same problems in your own writing (Bunn 80).” Thoroughly reading writing related to what you are working on will help you to write with stronger technique. Writing the first draft of a paper is definitely the most difficult part of the writing process for me. Perhaps, this is because pulling together a piece of writing out of thin air (or less seemly places) is not easy. Even as I type this one page response, I struggle to connect my thoughts and ideas in a cohesive and meaningful way. My writing process generally involves me thinking, over thinking, and then thinking some more, before anything even makes it past my fingertips. Writing badly on purpose is a dreadfully foreign concept, but that is precisely what Anne Lamott advises her readers to do in her excerpt “Shitty First Drafts”.…

How do professional writers deal with writing blocks? Professional authors have battled with writer's block since the start of literature itself, famous authors such as Mark Twain even “offered advice” for writers to overcome writer's block: ““The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one,” (Van Cleave , Ryan, et al). This loss of words and inspirations strickens the author with loss of creative process and stop the production of their lifeline: their own writing; through interviews, a couple of writers have explained how they deal with writers block and how they find joy in working.…

This little tip helped me to sharpen my critical analytical skills. Now that I am constantly asking myself similar questions as to those of my professor, I am able to break every piece of writing into small topics. Thus, I can grasp the main idea of every writer easily. Not only I learned how to read critically, but I also learned how to identify different writing styles. To clarify, whenever I am in the process of breaking the information into small pieces, I have identified that certain authors have the same patterns in their writings.…

Writers block, that cripplingly frustrating feeling of not being able to put pen to paper. “…writing as a problem- solving process…when the process dead-ends in writer’s block.” Pg.196. We have all experienced it from time to time, some more than others. This fact can be highly frustrating to people who are greatly impacted by writer’s block, “what makes them so different than me”.…

Writing would never be called my passion; however, if the topic of interest is thought-provoking, writing can be pleasurable. I have always been exceedingly critical of my writing, and I have a bad habit of producing your standard “five paragraph with five sentences” essay. High school was the true test of my writing skills, mainly because I had to take the ACT and SAT with writing if I wanted to get into the only Georgia school that I thought was up to par with my standards: The University of Georgia. Even though my teachers have considered me to be an acceptable writer, I have always considered myself rather subpar. This insecurity about my writing has haunted me throughout my life, and I have this feeling towards writing mainly…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

Whether we know it or not in this modern society we are writers everyday of our lives. These interactions shape not only how we communicate but how we write as well. Personally, I have been shaped by the influence of both other writers I have known and those I have only read the creations of. Those same influences contributed to both my writing style in the classroom and to my identity as a writer. I spent a lot of my childhood with my nose deep in fiction novels at near by libraries.…

Shivam 1 Shivam Gupta Professor Keith MacDonald Composition 1 20 October 2017 Read Like a Writer In Mike Bunn’s “How to Read Like a Writer” he explains how one can become a better reader simply by trying to understand the article from the point of view of the writer, by analyzing every word, sentence or paragraph with one question in mind, "what effect did the writer intend to have with these words?". I believe it is important for us to have this skill because it gives us a better insight into what we are reading, it helps us understand on a deeper level exactly what the article is trying to tell us and in response, this teaches us better techniques and skills to become better writers. Using guidelines set by Bunn in his article, I will illustrate…

Going back over my fifth grade notebooks has not once failed to make me laugh and cringe at my boy troubles and lists of cute boys in my class. I love words. I love reading them, writing them and interpreting them. Through all phases of life, I had a usual nature to try and write my feelings down and call it art, even if it were scribbles on a Post-It note. Same goes for the song stanzas I wrote in seventh grade that were really loosely based on a Taylor Swift song and are still relatable today.…

Like with quality reading, quality writing is the activity of being alone, but with the exception of reading words, one must pick out words, choosing the very best to jot down on the page. The inspiration varies with each writer, even if the writer is not fully aware that he is in fact a writer, but the inspiration is the same for the artist, for the musician, the architect, and the sculptor. When one writes, they are not only expressing themselves (and, if they like to write, expressing themselves in the purest way they deem possible), they are also creating something, whether they are conscious of this or not, because the formation of words, the development of sentences, and the structuralizing of anything written takes a considerable amount of effort, discipline, thought and creativity—no matter what the finished written work is. In other words, to write means to think and to think means to have thought, which Sullivan actually affirms when he says, “you cannot create unless you think, and you cannot truly think without creating thought.” So, in another instance of using Sullivan’s own argument against him, writing is a slow activity not because the mind is going too fast but because the mind is disciplining itself by gathering its thoughts and translating them into readable…

As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…
