While certain symptoms of illness are less often overlooked, this is not always the case. An almost tragic example of this is portrayed by Charlotte Perkins in her story “The Yellow Wallpaper.” This eye-opening short story utilizes irony to present the narrator’s delusional state of mind, where as her husband, amongst the other characters, does not realize the fate of the narrator after her misdiagnosis. The issue that is more surprising than the depression and insanity seen in this story are the attitudes of the other characters. The narrator’s insanity is caused by her husband, the treatment prescribed to her, and her obsession with the wallpaper.…

Use of portraiture in redefining ostracized people In discussing nineteenth century portraiture it is relevant to discuss the different styles of Anne-Louis Girodet and Théodore Géricault in their Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Belley and Portrait of an Insane Man respectively. Both of these artists express a distinct difference in stylistic technique and composition that create an interesting contrast when juxtaposed. There is a similar attempt to render the subject matter of an African man and an insane man in a normalized fashion. These groups of people have traditionally been ostracized from the societal whole and depicted, in unfavorable light.…

Before Darl burned down Gillespie's barn, it was appropriate for the reader to view him as the most rational member of the family; thus, being the most reliant narrator of the story. For instance, he was able to narrate Addie’s death without infiltrating it with his emotions or opinions. However, as soon as the barn burns down, we see a sudden change in his character.
