Method
Participants
Eighteen undergraduate students from University of California (10 Women, 8 men, Mean age: 20.4 Years, Age range: 19-23 years old) are all part of a Psychology class. All students in the class enrolled into this specific lab section by choice. During the experiment, all participants were exposed to each condition. The participants were compensated for their time through partial course credit. Assumed that all students are fluent in english and had normal or corrected vision.
Design
This experiment follows a within subject design as all subjects were exposed to both conditions. All subjects at one point were both the participant and experimenter for the two conditions. The independent variable for this experiment is the …show more content…
Each block was the first and second half of the columns on the board. A block contains a unique color and word pair that could not found in any other block. Through counterbalancing, the blocks were randomized to have a different order of color words and a different order of ink colors. For the combinations of word and ink colors the ink color would never match the color word. In addition the ink color or color word of one block cannot start the next block. For example one block cannot end with a word in the ink color blue and the next block start with a word in the ink color blue. This means there is sampling without replacement so each word can appear in all different ink …show more content…
Each paper contained the condition the subject had to perform first and these papers were shuffled and passed out around the classroom. The number of participants that started with each condition is equal to control for order effects. After the first condition was decided the subjects were asked to form a line in front of the two different rooms where each condition for the experiment was held. A supervisor of the research study started off both rooms as the first experimenter. Once the first subject finished their first condition, they became the experimenter. They conducted the experiment with the next participant and at the end informed them that they are now the experimenter. The old experimenter informed the old subject that he is the new experimenter and to read the instructions. Then the old experimenter moved on to the next room. During this time, the supervisor moved on to the next room and started off that room
