I can’t believe that I am here at Harvard addressing all of you. Today marks the 15th anniversary of Naruto. The best way to sum up a manga artists life is “It is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration”. During these 15 years I have been through it all from getting only 8 hours of sleep a week to meet deadlines, working during the weekends to make the editor happy and missing out my son’s birthday party to finish my work, but I have been happy. Before I talk about my work I would like to thank everyone who’s ever read Naruto, because it was your passion and your support and your love that made gave me strength to climb the tallest mountains and swim the deepest oceans. So, once again to my fans THANK YOU!

Or why do different people perceive my work in different ways although it’s the same everywhere? This is a question I never gave much thought to, but was always quietly pondering about it. Now I have reached the end of a phase of my career I realize the way I perceive my work is totally different from how other people perceive it and it’s it

This is my conclusion, as well as, how I got there. 15 years ago the question “Do people see my work in the same light as I do?” Was irrelevant all that mattered was the fame and money, but with age comes the unquenchable want for wisdom and slowly this question grew from a little ant hill to mount Everest. Perception of language comes from who we are as person I cannot fully explain it, but in short it’s determined by our gender, where we are from, how we interact and in general what makes us who we are. Everyone perceives the language I use in a different way and that’s what makes me

Growing up speaking out loud was always difficult; people would stare and whisper. Their whispers would make us feel like we were invisible and they did not know that we could hear them. Raffaela Zanuttini is an advocate for grammatical diversity within the English language. In Zanuttini’s article, “Our Language Prejudices Don’t Make No Sense,” she explains how negative comments directed to minority groups, about their English language, appear to be inappropriate. In Amy Tan’s “Mother’s Tongue” she goes in depth to describe how language has influenced the way she sees herself and others, along with her mother. Whether people realize it or not, language affects the way people are perceived and how they look at themselves. In my experience, although a lot of people believe the way people speak reveals their intelligence and ability, I believe that language is just tool and does not reflect the person speaking.…

Popular recording artist, Rihanna, recently dropped a new single titled “Work.” In the song, she incorporates many words from a dialect called Jamaican Patois, an example being her singing “you said me haffi work.” People rushed to Social Media to complain that the song was annoying because she was speaking gibberish, not knowing that “haffi” is an actual word in a different culture. In the article “Do You Speak American?” by Robert MacNeil a similar issue is brought forward to a broad audience of educated, middle-class people. The audience can be derived from a 2007 USA Today report that stated that 71% of readers attended some college with most of them being middle-class people.…

However, when talking in a less formal situation (eg. talking to friends), you’re more likely to revert to your own sociolect. I have recently conducted a 10 person survey to see if people judge those who use non-standard english. My survey’s results show that more people had an opinion (negative or positive) than those who didn’t. My results therefore showed that 72.5% of people are constantly judging spoken language. The two interviews I’ve studied, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and Newsnight both feature the hip-hop artist Dizzee Rascal.…

Would you stop something dangerous from happening even if it hurt your relationships with your friends? Many students face this question everyday and an alarming amount of them would say no. This is a very dangerous way of thinking especially in scenarios where people's lives are at risk. The reasons often revolve around how the students feel their friendships or reputations would be affected. Although some readers of “To Tell or Not To Tell” by Mary Kate Frank have argued students should not speak up, because of the possible damage to friendships there could be, closer examination shows that not speaking up has far more repercussions than not doing so, by not speaking out the problems have room to become more dangerous.…

A good writer uses language as a tool to express his originality and ideas. That is all good writing is about. It’s not about who can sound the most intelligent by using the most scientific words possible, or writing about a specific experience or issue because of a racial background because that’s what everyone expects you to do. As Jaswinder Bolina said it, good writing is about “whether I choose to pound on the crooked nail of race or gender, self or Other, whether I decide on some obscure subject while forgoing the other obvious one, when I write, the hammer belongs to me” (193).…
