Introduction:
I. According to “www.cfr.org” there were nearly 139,000 reported measles cases worldwide for 2014. And according to “www.cdc.gov” the United States in 2014 experienced a dramatic increase in the number of measles cases up to 668 covering 27 different states.
II. The United States reported in 2000 that measles had been eliminated; last year’s numbers are the highest since 2000.
III. I am a member of the healthcare community and see first-hand how viruses and diseases may be avoided if appropriate prevention measures are taken (i.e. vaccination and appropriate vaccination timelines).
IV. Thesis: I hope to convince you of the necessity to get vaccinated for measles so that we can minimize the …show more content…

Body:
I. In 1980, before measles immunizations, www.who.int reported that there was an “estimated 2.6 million reported deaths ANNUALLY worldwide from measles.”
A. WWW.medscape.com reported “1-3 of every 1000 individuals infected with the measles virus would die.”
1. “In 2013 approximately 145,000 children globally mainly under the age of 5, died from the measles virus,” as reported by www.who.int
2. The 668 number of cases reported in the U.S. in 2014 is the highest since 2000 when measles were thought to be virtually eliminated.
B. The Center for Disease Control reported that in” 2015 the U.S. experienced a massive outbreak linked to an amusement park.”
1. This was the same exact virus that was identified to be spread by a traveler from the Philippines in 2014 cdc.gov.
Transition: The statistics for the reemergence of measles as you can see is very real. But why? I would like to discuss the possible reasons for this …show more content…
The World Health Organization has established goals and objectives for the years 2015 and then again for 2020
1. For 2015 they want to reduce measles by 95% compared to 2000 levels and to achieve regional elimination goals.
2. The WHO by the year end of 2020 would like to achieve multiple goals
a) The elimination in 5 WHO regions
b) To maintain the two-dose vaccination coverage
c) To achieve outbreak response preparedness programs
d) To build public confidence in measles’ vaccination.
Conclusion:
I. I hope that you now can see how important measles’ vaccination is for everyone and the impact it has on global reduced cases and possible prevention in the future.
II. Today we’ve talked about the reemergence of measles, the probable reasons and strategies to reduce and possible elimination of measles.
III. I would like to reiterate the importance of getting your family vaccinated and urging your community to do so also. We should take all precautions necessary to protect ourselves and our community from this disease.
