Informative Essay: The Earth Is Flat

Lately in the media you may have recently heard about yet another celebrity claiming the Earth is flat. The theory claims that the planet we live on isn’t actually flat and the pictures from space are just hoaxes. Shaquille O’Neal is one of the many celebrities to come out in recent months claiming that Earth is flat. O'Neal said to a reporter, “It’s true. The Earth is flat. The Earth is flat. Yeah, it is. Yes, it is. Listen, there are three ways to manipulate the mind — what you read, what you see and what you hear. In school, first thing they teach us is, ‘Oh, Columbus discovered America,’ but when he got there, there were some fair-skinned people with the long hair smoking on the peace pipes. So, what does that tell you? Columbus didn’t …show more content…
They believe that Flat Earth accelerates upwards at 32 feet per second squared and that “gravity” is actually Earth going up so fast that is catches up with us when we jump. Flat-earthers believe photos of the globe are photoshopped; GPS devices are rigged to make airplane pilots think they are flying in straight lines around a sphere when they are actually flying in circles above a disc. The motive for world governments' concealment of the true shape of the Earth has not been ascertained, but flat-earthers believe it is probably financial. "In a nutshell, it would logically cost much less to fake a space program than to actually have one, so those in on the Conspiracy profit from the funding NASA and other space agencies receive from the …show more content…
Anyone who thinks the Earth is flat is ignorant and obviously didn’t pay attention in science class. It have been proven that the world is round and not flat. We used to think the Earth is flat and that is because we didn’t have anything to tell us it wasn’t. People assumed it was because when you are on Earth it seems flat. That is one reason people still think it is flat, but that is very childish in my opinion. We have satellite imagery that shows the Earth is a sphere and not a disk. We are not the center of the universe, we are one of the few planets that supports life, but that doesn’t mean we are in the center. The Earth has a core, it has a very hot core of magma. If the Earth was flat, we wouldn’t have a core to our planet. The deepest place on Earth is the Mariana Trench which is over six miles deep. That means this disk we are flying around on is more like a cylinder than a disk. So with this theory we are more like a soda can, not a dinner plate, there’s a theory for people to consider. The Earth is a cylinder, not a sphere, and not a disk. Now you may be thinking that I am crazy for suggesting this, but this is just like how people say the Earth is flat to me. It isn’t and it ridiculous to suggest

Long ago, people believed that the Earth was the center of the universe, and that all the stars, planets, and other celestial bodies orbited around it. However, as pivotal discoveries were made and new theories emerged, society gained a much more insightful understanding of the cosmos above. In the second century, an astronomer by the name of Claudius Ptolemy proposed his geocentric model of the solar system, which depicted Earth in the center of the universe and the planets and the Sun orbiting in concentric circles around it. There were problems with this model, however, and years later an astronomer named Nicolaus Copernicus proposed another model which showed the Sun at the center.…

Galileo had set out and found lots of refined evidence from his own inventions. From that evidence he was able to use his logic and conclude that it would make more sense having the sun in the center, rather than the earth. Being able to convince the world to change their minds about a very crucial topic like this was near impossible. Copernicus published book the year that he died, and according to a letter that Galileo wrote, he had been “mocked”(Text 5). This prevented Galileo from sharing his own viewpoint.…

Yet, according to Starchild, a NASA based company, the Pythagoras first proposed that the Earth was round in 500 B.C. Moreover, historians are certain in which educated people in Columbus’s time knew the Earth was round (Strauss). Columbus’s main objection in his expeditions was to find gold and slaves, not to prove the Earth was round. Because Columbus did not sail from Spain to prove that the Earth was round, information regarding the Columbus expeditions is not only conflicting, but also largely…

I related this concept to video segment Indian Pride: Myths and Truths because it similarly sought to “dispel Indian myths with the real truth.” Readers of Columbus’s Log assumed he correctly identified his discoveries but after reading this work it becomes evident that Columbus had only assimilated the unknown to the known. This concept is evident in the following lines: “he tended to fit all the other new phenomena into his pre-existing mental framework” (16). I found this element to be shocking; if I were to encounter new things I would emphasize their dissimilarities not attempt to explain them away. Columbus assimilates the unknown to the known in the most bizarre ways; he even claims there are mermaids!…

To a popular belief, Columbus didn’t prove that the world is round at all, that was founded out way before he even thought of it. Firstly, to be a great person, you must do good, though according to reality, raping and killing people isn’t listed as being great, but the opposite. According to a source, it quotes, “His men hunted Indians for sport and profit – beating,…

There are many misconceptions in astronomy. For example, many people (even Harvard graduates) believe that the reason that seasons exist is that the closer Earth is to the sun, the hotter it is, resulting in summer. Likewise, the further away the Earth is from the Sun, the colder it is, resulting in winter. We know that the reason seasons exist is because of the 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth. For instance, when Earth is on the right of the Sun, the tilt causes the northern hemisphere to be in the dark and the southern hemisphere to be illuminated in daylight.…

The hoax is based off of faulty thinking and understanding and the misinterpretation of results and data brought back from the moon. The problem that arises through this is people are believing the wrong things for the wrong reasons. In Holtorf, Susan Richardson is quoted saying, “Given that most of the cult archaeologies have been more than adequately discredited, the ‘undecided’ option seems far from satisfactory.” This reasoning can be used to analyze the moon landing hoax as well. There is more than enough evidence countering any claims against the moon landing to believe anything but the truth.…
