Everyone knows somebody with it, someone who's beaten it, or somebody who's died from it. It is the second leading cause of death in the United States, and kills more than 500,000 Americans every year. If you haven't figured out what's being talked about already, it's cancer. Cancer is a cureless disease that has caused problems since the Mesozoic era. It is a well-structured disease that knows how to spread everywhere, even after special treatments are used to reduce or eliminate the cancerous cells. But with all the advancements of medical science made in the 21st century, it still presents a valid argument, of why scientists have yet to discover a cure for it. The possibilities are endless, so what needs to be …show more content…
A recent cancer patient said that she was surprised about how technologically advanced the cancer field was (Bay). When diagnosed with skin cancer, she had to have the cancerous cells painfully cut out of her face and chest. Although thankful to have found out the cancer had not spread anywhere other than the exposed skin, the scars and memories still remain. Which is why scientists are still frantically searching for that magical cure to solve it all. They seem to be getting somewhere though, because they most recently came across this new possible form of treatment called immunotherapy. Kaumaya expresses that “breakthrough immunotherapies are emerging, techniques that train the immune system to recognize and attack cancer as the enemy” (5 February 2017). Cancer spreads so fast because these cells mutate themselves to look like all other cells in the body. This means the “T cells” recognize and overlook the cancer cells thinking there is no danger. But with this new treatment being developed, it will help the “T cells” distinguish and destroy these deadly cancer cells. It is also stated that “with promising results, such new weapons [immunotherapies] are providing hope that cancer can ultimately be defeated” (Kaumaya 5 February
