You look in the mirror. What do you see? For most people that decide to go to the gym, it is the unwanted physique that they see in the reflection or the motivation to get “back into shape.” The term, to get into shape, may depend on the person and the goals they want to set, but one thing is for sure--aesthetic appearance and strength are usually the reasons to go to the gym according to Quenqua (5). Now you walk into the gym, to your left is a class being taught and to your right is the equipment. What do you choose? The class, often known as crossfit, or the equipment, often known as weightlifting? Weightlifting is the far superior option if you want that muscular and toned body built to lift cars and houses--not really, but you get the idea. Building muscle is something everyone can do. Compound movements can be used to build mass on multiple muscle groups. Bench press can be used as an example of a compound movement as it requires the pectorals (chest), the anterior deltoids (front shoulders), triceps brachii, and latissimus dorsi (back). There is also muscle isolation that crossfitters do not use. Muscle isolation is doing exercises meant to target only one muscle group. This is used to prevent overtraining of all muscle groups like compound movements and to target one specific body part that may be weaker than the rest. Making sure that either one muscle or multiple muscle groups are being overloaded with weights builds the aesthetic muscle mass (Rini 21).
