Abstract
Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease which can affect the lungs or body depending on which part the bacteria has made its home. Pulmonary tuberculosis has two phases on which the bacteria exposes itself. Latent TB, the individual has no signs or symptoms of being ill at all. In this phase, the bacteria will appear at some point in the individual’s lifetime if no testing has been done prior to its active phase. TB disease, is the active phase in which the latent TB individual takes ill, and shows signs and symptoms of the bacteria being present in the body. Movies tend to show the effect of the tuberculosis disease, giving the visualization that a patient is in bed coughing profusely, blood has been excreted via mouth, the individual seems to be dripping with sweat and weak. However, despite our take on Hollywood films and their ways of spooking us with cinemographs, actors, and make-up, Hollywood’s method of trying to get its audience to fully grasp the nature of the situation is not too far off from the truth. When this visualization is placed in front of a general population the individuals seeing this begin asking themselves all the pertinent questions regarding the event. Can I get tuberculosis? The way that it can go undetected for possible years and lay dormant, striking at the right moment, that unexpected moment. Individuals do not realize how important it is to be screened for this disease, due to the fact the only real exposure to this disease is Hollywood films. Even though we question it during the time the film plays, the thought quickly vanishes once the film is over. Individuals can be overheard saying, “It’s just a movie, it’s not real”, not realizing that this disease is very real. It is contagious and individuals who are not treated can suffer greatly even during treatment, if it is caught on time. Medicine has evolved, but diseases have also learned to adapt. Meaning for stronger, longer, and harsh treatments to get well. Get screened and leave no cough, sneeze, or laugh
