History of Polio:
It was 1789 when Polio was first discovered by Michael Underwood, although Nation Museum of American History states, “1894, first outbreak of polio in epidemic form in the U.S. occurs in Vermont, with 132 cases.” Not only was it one outbreak, in 1916 the world was found with 27000 paralyzed patients of Polio and 6000 deaths. It is a contagious disease, spread by sneezing, coughing, and when hands of an uninfected person touch with the stool of a person who is suffering from polio. The virus enters by mouth, spreading to the intestines, thus infecting all the cells of body. It then invades the brain and the spinal cord that is responsible for muscle weakness and paralysis. The virus's action paralyze muscle groups in the chest and soon patients would have great difficulty in breathing. Iron lungs, also known as tank respirator, were then introduced which were commonly used. The device is a negative pressure ventilator which helps a person breathe normally if the chest muscles lose its ability to work. The infantile paralysis (poliomyelitis) occurs mostly in infants and children under five years old because of conditions of poor hygiene.
