“By now, news of the Apollo explosion had spread around the world. Throughout Europe, Asia and other parts of the globe, people waited for the latest reports” (Anastasio 56). Everyone prayed the astronauts would make it home, because these men were not just a mission, they were men with families who loved and cared for them. “They were people, not machines. And it was time that the world understood that” (Anastasio 66). With the astronauts stuck in space, their only hope was Ken Mattingly. Ken was on earth trying to direct the astronauts home. Ken had been trained for emergency situations like the one the astronauts in space were currently in. Since Ken was not in space, he had to verbally give them instructions through the LEM’s speaker.
