Fashion changed dramatically with the introduction of new music in the eighties. Both genders had a change in trends and this has helped make fashion what it is today. The eighties was a time of getting rid of all the hippie trends and having a more materialistic type of style emerged, along with the introduction to the punk style. Music artists such as Madonna introduced a more risqué trend with bra straps being shown and wearing underwear as an outerwear piece. Women also started to wear jeans as a fashion statement, and broke down gender barriers between jeans and women. Punk was very popular in the 80’s, it was was a nonconformist, rebellious style that originated to go against the peace and love lifestyle of the 70’s. Punk was inspired by rebellious English bands like the Sex Pistols who were a not like other punk bands. They represented anarchy and pandemonium and were recognized for their appearance and for their music (Fuamoli 1). Punk was loud, angry, and designed to shock. Typical punk fashion included tight black jeans, a ripped, tattered T-shirt held together with safety pins and heavy Doc Martens boots (William). Everywhere we go there is some type of music, have it be today 's top song on the radio or is the sound of crickets outside your window with their recognizable chirp. Music has many forms and has each person interpret it differently. With the number of genres we have today it 's almost impossible to find something that isn 't for everyone. We have so many platforms to share and find new music and the possibilities for the future are endless. Fashion was one of the many things heavily influenced by music. Music helped to define generations and push movements that are very important to fashion and our history as a whole. We created groups of people with similar interest in music types which sparked generations of style and unity between people. A special connection was created where a person 's music type could be seen by the way they presented themself, or even the option to not have it define you. The diversity the music industry has created is massive, and it’s continuing to grow and change. The influence of music on fashion will always play a part in past and future
