Infiltration investigation
Introduction
Infiltration is the process by which water on the ground surface enters the soil. The infiltration rate is the velocity or speed at which water enters into the soil. It is usually measured by the depth (in mm) of the water layer that can enter the soil in one hour. On the 2nd of October, we were split into groups and we had to do an infiltration investigation. The experiment was set out to find out whether the infiltrations rate throughout the school were same or not. The hypothesis was “Infiltration rates remain constant throughout the school” We carried out the experiment to see whether the hypothesis was true or not. This experiment was carried out because we had to check the infiltration rates of the locations we picked throughout the school and checked whether it matched the hypothesis or not. We had to the hollow pipe because we had to put water in a specific area and the measuring cup was used because we had to put the same amount of water in each area. My group and I were first given a map of the whole school and we picked our five locations and then we took all the equipment to the areas one at a time. We first placed the hollow cylinder on the ground and then we made sure it was stable and then we put 500ml of water into the pipe and then we waited for all the water to sink into the ground. My principal findings were that each area had its own infiltration rate. Areas which have plants absorb water quicker than other areas. This happens because the roots help in soaking up the water and this is proven by my result. I also found out the shady areas absorb water quicker than the rest of the areas the table supports my findings. My results are similar to original suppositions. I initially thought that the Astroturf would be impermeable but it was a permeable surface and the water did not take much time to absorb the water. I expected the most of the things of the things to happen. I also learned about the things that I didn’t think would have had happened. I also learned a lot of new things for the infiltration test and my findings. The hypothesis which is “Infiltration rates remain constant throughout the school” is rejected because each area has its own infiltration rate. The water absorbed at a certain speed in different areas and in some areas the water did not get absorbed because they were impermeable surfaces e.g. tar mat, concrete and bricks etc. The school I made out of many different materials and it is not necessary that infiltration rate of each substance or material would the same.
