BV is an infection which occurs when there is an imbalance of good and harmful bacteria in the vagina. The CDC (cdc.gov) states that this is the most common infection in women ages 15-44. A study was done in which 327 women with either infertility, recurrent spontaneous abortion (RCA) or lower genital tract infections (LGTI) along with 183 healthy pregnant and non-pregnant women to determine the causality between BV and infertility. Each woman was asked about their reproductive health history and any history of STI’s. A pelvic examination was done to record signs of infection and measure vaginal secretion pH.
