When researching the top causes of a low weight at the time of birth, poor nutrition of the mother is one of the top ten causes. To properly develop and thrive, infants need a steady, rich supply of nutrients from the mother. For example, folic acid helps establish the brain and spinal column, and proteins build the infant 's exploding cells. Iron helps in the production of hemoglobin; prevents anemia, low birth weight, and premature delivery, and this is why we choose to focus on increasing the intake of this vitamin. As stated above, lack of money, access to health care, and poor quality of health care are all factors that contribute to infant deaths. The pregnancy kit will include the essential items to safely and sanitarily deliver a baby. For this component of the product, we considered existing kits. These birth kits are used worldwide to provide for safe and sanitary birthing conditions in remote locations. Each kit has similar contents. Our group complied all the contents found in these various kits, and then assessed which contents were featured most frequently in order to determine the importance of each component. The following products are what is considered the bare minimum; the essential items to safely deliver a baby:
· One pair of sterile exam gloves
· One plastic lined under pad
· Two absorbent towels
· One sterile disposable scalpel (for cutting cord)
· Two sterile plastic umbilical clamps
· One plastic page with a tie
· One receiving blanket
· One sterile OB
