Inequality can be seen as you read through the novel. For example, “She went up to the front steps and hanged on the door…’She’s supposed to go around in back.’” (124). Since Calpurnia was African-American they weren’t allowed to go up the front steps they were supposed to go around back. An example of prejudice is “‘this case should have never come to trial.’...’has not produced one iota of medical evidence...It has relied instead upon the testimony of two witnesses whose evidence...has been flatly contradicted by the defendant.’” (271). They accused Tom of rape with very minimal/no evidence. Even though they know that Atticus is right and that what they’re doing is wrong, no one speaks up. An example of judgement that was said is, “‘you gentlemen would go along with them on the assumption --the evil assumption-- that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women.’” (273). They judge Negroes based off of their appearance and what they have heard about them. They don’t get the time to know them and just treat them badly.
