The Industrial Revolution and its Impacts
Based off of many events that occurred during the Industrial Age, it is fair to state that the Industrial Age was harsh, but necessary. It started in England due to its ability to produce vasts amounts of products and goods. Initially, it was all caused by an agricultural revolution. The Agricultural Revolution that incited the Industrial Age produced vasts amount of food. This caused a rise in population due to the high abundance of resources. This gave people the ability to afford more products which led to more children being born. As a result of the rise in population, there was a need for even more goods and products. Socialism, capitalism, and communism played a part in the industrial revolution. Some philosophers preferred capitalism, while others felt the restriction of the economy was best for a nation. To be more specific, a Welsh mill owner named Robert Owen founded Socialism. His main goal was providing benefits and good working conditions for everyone. He clearly demonstrated this practice by buying a cotton mill in New Lanark, Scotland and offering workers benefits, good wages, and education for their children. Karl Marx’s ideas led to the development of Communism. Marx felt that the factory and business owners were abusers of the working class. Adam Smith was the most famous philosopher who preached that the government shouldn’t interfere with the economy at all. Laissez faire was the French phrase that meant that the government should leave the economy alone. The steam engine, spinning jenny, and telegraph were examples of essential inventions which had a huge impact on modern products. James Hargreaves invented the Spinning Jenny, Thomas Newcomen used coal to power the steam engine, and James Watt created a steam engine that could be used in a variety of industries. The steam engine was essential for transportation. An example would be the use of trains and boats. The Spinning Jenny was essential for producing thread much more quickly than the traditional thread spinning machine. Henry Ford’s establishment of an assembly line also helped several companies to become more time efficient. The assembly line consisted of several stations that all assembled a product in the same order. With each person only having one job, it was very simple. This was a lot faster than one person constructing an entire product on their own. As well as steam being used as energy, oil took its place in the second revolution. John D. Rockefeller became the richest man in the world after founding the Standard Oil Company in the late 1800s.
