The development of new types of ships helped advance interregional trade networks. Ships became resilient to waves. Another technology that helped with trade in the Indian Ocean was the magnetic compass innovated in China. The compass helped sailors keep track of their location. Another significant innovation was the three-field system and terrace farming. Each system helped develop agriculture into a more efficient and useful process. Factors that encouraged commercial growth in the Post Classical Era was the increase of trade through developed routes such as the Silk Road. For a period of time, the trade dwindled down, but during the Mongol Rule, it rose back to its peak during the Post Classical Era. This era also saw the rise of many cities, such as Medina, which rose due to the rise of Islam. Delhi rose when Islamic invaders settled under the Sultan after defeating the Hindus.
