During the scene where Will aims a gun at Sylvia and took her as a hostage, the use of facial expression challenges the audience to consider Sylvia’s feeling. The horror face of Sylvia, when Will aims a gun at her roughly, shows that Sylvia is nervous, scared but in another hand, she also looked disappointed at Will and had an incredulous look. Niccol also uses the wide shot to show the reaction of people to that situation. They looked terrified and anxious about Sylvia but no one tried to help her. When will took Sylvia among the people, they back off and made Will take Sylvia as a hostage. They didn’t do anything to stop Will from taking Sylvia. They just screamed and watched what’s happening which was helpless. I think this is an important scene because this scene makes the audience look closely at our society and it shows how ignorant the system is. We in our real life also have the thought that helping people in disadvantages can risk us so even if we see someone experiencing disadvantages, we can’t go forward and help them because we know that we will get risk when we help them. For example, there is always someone getting bullied in the school but we can’t stop them because no one come forward to help them. They all go silence and ignore them because they know that if they help them, they can be the one who will get bullied. There are also people who try to help them but it’s just a few of them and it is very rare to see someone who comes forward to help people who need help. This shows how ignorant is our
