Along with Psychological manipulation, these things go hand in hand. The party controls the people with Psychological Manipulation, which is also known as brainwashing. If we break down the quote, fear, control, and manipulation are all valid themes throughout it. “You have to believe it” is also another way of saying if you don’t believe it, then something bad will happen to you, or you will have to believe it, if you wanted to keep your normal life.
Throughout the book, Manipulation, Physical control, and other forms of torture have been talked about in detail for one reason. To get the point of totalitarianism across as being a bad thing. The quote is saying that the party can manipulate anything even as simple as two plus two equals four. The past is something that can be manipulated by the party, and no one would know any difference.
Winston, who is about 35 years old said this quote, during the last chapter of the book. This quote is important because it ties all the events in the book together. The book starts with describing the society in which Winston lives in, where the government is in control of everything, even people's thoughts. Then Winston tries to be a part of a sort of revolution, but all the people he thought were on his side, were actually working for the Thought Police, or the Ministry of Love. It all ties back to this one
