In Cuban I Was A German Shepherd Analysis

The tale I picked is Cuban: ‘In Cuba I Was a German Shepherd’ by Ana Menendez
I chose this tale because the name simply lured me more than the other tale.

This tale is about 4 men who gathered under a banyan tree every morning to play dominos and remember the old times.
I didn’t like the story because it had many vocabulary that I didn’t understand, and sometimes I didn’t even understand what the man were talking about.
"I'm not going to be the sad spectacle in someone's vacation slide show,"

Máximo, Antonio, Raúl, and Carlos got together every day in the morning to set under a banyan tree in a rectangle shaped park, and sometimes remember their homes when the wind passes through the tree leaves. (MENÉNDEZ, 2001)

The story I chose to analyze was The Story of My Body by Judith Ortiz Cofer. This is my thesis: The “Story of My Body” by Judith Ortiz Cofer. Judith takes you on a journey of a Puerto Rican girl who battles the way people see her skin, color, size, and looks. Judith uses the girl’s point of view, diction from the Hispanic language, and metaphors to bring us into her thoughts and feelings in order to show us how Hispanic women are judged throughout different stages of their life. The evidence I used to support my essay was mostly from the text itself.…

The first chapter of Dreaming in Cuban, by Cristina Garcia is very significant as it sets up the characters, what drives them, the place of the novel, societal issues, and establishes relationships to the theme of the novel. The opening sequence displays Celia’s loving character by illustrating the relationship of Celia with Cuba and her husband Jorge. Being voted the primary lookout for Santa Teresa del Mar at the beginning of the chapter, Celia is greatly proud and honored to have such a role. From this, we can see that Celia is very patriotic towards her country and is willing to put in much effort to protect it. There are many stories told in my family. Anyone and everyone told them, some nights it would be my mom and other nights it would be my grandpa. There would always be two stories read; the first one would be from a book called “My Book of Bible Stories”. This book has so many pictures asks questions has descriptive words and is still one of my favorite books. After that story whoever was telling the story would make up a silly story usually about a blue or green man with a giraffe that went traveling and exploring (I have no clue why).…

The Cuban Heritage Collection (CHC) Library houses thousands of written documents on Cuban life and culture. After hundreds of hours of research in the library I went on to compose a creative short story called Fort Chafee-1980. Briefly, the story is about the two Cuban children, Ernesto and Maria, and their daily struggles living at the undermanned and overcrowded Cuban refugee resettlement center of Fort Chafee. I would later go on to present my work at a university wide symposium. An excerpt from my story was actually published by the University of Miami in Cuban Identity and Diaspora, which can now be found in the CHC Library.…

During this quarter we have cover various themes throughout all the reading we were assign. The last novel we had to read was The World in Half by Cristina Henríquez and what made this book so different and unique from the others was it’s location, Panama. The others novels and stories we read were about immigrants from Mexico, Cuba and Puerto Rico, which are the most popular Latino community. Other Spanish speaking countries don 't get much recognition in the United States, especially Central America. Most americans can’t distinguish all of the Spanish-speaking countries, so they put all of us in the same box.…
