There is always ways to improve patient care at the lab. Patient care is the top priority.
Patients depend on the lab for correct results, so that their physician can diagnose and treat them accurately. It is crucial for lab staff to be focused and precise. Staff needs to minimize errors and follow correct procedures in processing specimens. All lab staff needs to be trained the using the same procedures, so all specimens are handled in the appropriate manner.

Decisions need to be made rather specimens meet the criteria, or need to be rejected, to produce accurate results.When a specimen is rejected, the physician needs to be notified and specimen needs to be recollected.Specimens also need to be labeled properly by checking
identification.

Critical results need to be called to the correct physician.The sooner the physician is aware of the result the sooner the patient can be notified and treated.The lab staff has to make sure this happens as soon as possible. Patient’s health and lives are utmost priority.
Specimens that need to be sent to a reference lab are processed utilizing the requirements that the reference lab has specified. Whether it is centrifuging specimens, pouring specimens off, and having the knowledge to send specimens out at the correct temperature.Protocol needs to be followed to prevent rejected specimens.Preventing patient’s from having to return to the lab to be redrawn and inconvenienced is good customer service.

Teamwork in a lab is extremely important to maintain smooth work flow.Some people have not achieved the knowledge and ability to be team players and this makes it difficult

Smart processors have reduced the need to change chemicals frequently.

Federal law requires laboratories to keep records for several years.All documentation needs to be entered in the patient’s electronic medical record.Any missing information, such as; diagnosis codes needs to be obtained through the ordering physician, so insurance companies can be billed for services resulting in the lab collecting payment.It takes a considerable amount of revenue to keep a lab operating to the maximum performance.

Stat labs are priority.Physicians are waiting on these results to obtain a diagnosis and treat a patient.Lab staff needs to be alert and watching for these specimens so lab techs can result them.Installing tv monitors to track these stat specimens would help lab techs to track outstanding specimens. Monitoring would help prevent delays sooner.

Providing a 24/7 client service center phone number staffed by customer service representatives responding to incoming calls.Laboratory staff can focus on patient issues
