One of the ways I stay informed is by checking a news website every day and skimming through the news. I also hear some current events during my health class because we talk about current events for the first 5 minutes of class. Lastly, sometimes I watch the news because it is on the tv and I don’t have anything to

Like Amar, O’Brien goes into extensive details in his writings to better explain his point of view. Throughout chapter six of storm center, O’Brien gives multiple examples and details on how the supreme court and American way of life impact one another. After reading this chapter I feel more educated on the impact of the American life and supreme court and gained knowledge on information I did not know before. Three main points that caught my attention throughout this chapter were: the impact of public opinion on the supreme court, media coverage and the supreme court, and the implementation of unpopular supreme court decisions.…

Of course it needs information too, but the kind of information it needs can be generated only by vigorous popular debate. We do not know what we need to know until we ask the right questions, and we can identify the right questions only by subjecting our ideas about the world to the test of public controversy. Information, usually seen as the precondition of debate, is better understood as it is by product. When we get into arguments that focus and fully engage our attention, we become avid seekers of relevant information.…

To me this quote means that as human beings become increasingly aware of the diversity that exists throughout the globe and within our own country, we begin to acknowledge and respect one another, and through this we are one step closer in achieving peace within our country and our world. For starters, I came from a country which failed time and time again to see and understand this concept Rigoberta Menchú so intricately devised into words. Mexico, in all of its natural beauty and ancient civilizations to soak up; is now in deep social and economic peril. Luckily, my mother was sufficiently educated to catch the early warning signs and knew that she wanted a better life for her and me, somewhere where we could have a second chance at life.…

Instead the news is comprised of the bad things in the world; the things that make people stock up for an apocalypse, become shut ins, and force people to become paranoid about every little thing. It’s not that there aren’t happy things happening around the world, but the media knows that people react more to things that evoke fear. Business Week says, “But make no mistake that whatever you choose to eat, do, or believe in, people will keep trying to scare you.” This quote shows that there is no way to get away from the hysteria and fear mongering. Looking at the news today, there are several articles and posts about the Zika Virus and ISIS.…

In Eritrea, only state news media are authorized to operate. They do so under the complete direction of an information minister: Journalists are conscripted into their work and enjoy no editorial freedom and are handed specific instructions on how to cover events. Moreover, journalists suspected of sending information outside the country are thrown into prison without charge or trial and are held for extended periods of time without access to a family or a lawyer. Countries such as Eritrea, China, and North Korea feel that it is in the government's best interest, and in some cases the best interest of the people, to keep information from its citizens. They argue it is a matter of public and national safety and should be implemented in as many countries as possible.…

Have you ever really enjoyed watching the news on TV or reading the newspaper? All that news is not always that important to what you think it is. Yes, it is justifiable that thinking critically about the news has never been more important because the news could be erroneous, anyone could post on social media, and all news is not the same. To begin with, I think that we should think more critically about the news because news can be erroneous. According to the article, "Fact Check", in 1948 after the election, The Chicago Daily Tribune famously announced that Thomas Dewey had won over Harry Truman.…

The natural sciences are very much paradigmatic in nature. As outlined by Thomas Kuhn, the natural sciences are revolutionary as opposed to “normal”; Kuhn argues that in “normal science”, scientific progress is limited to the scope of the current paradigm itself. Revolutionary science deals with paradigm shifts, in which there is a change in the basic assumptions of a scientific theory. Paradigmatic thinkers, however, are often disregarded and brushed off due to their dynamic views. For example, the earth was thought to be flat for was widely accepted until Pythagoras introduced a spherical model.…

Media is an important factor in daily life. I think it is important for society as a whole to understand how the media effects the way they make decisions and how they think, specifically when it comes to political and civic engagement. This subject is important to me because my major is communication. As a communication major it is important to understand the relationship between the media and society because one day I could be the one creating the media. I narrowed my search down to how it effects society in terms of political and civic engagement because my minor is political science and I would like to be in the field of politics.…
