Diverse Classroom Reflection

As you can see, my classroom has a lot of space around the desks. I picked this deign because it is very easy for the whole group of students to see the teacher and the front of the room where the whiteboard is. Having space around the desks also allows to form different shapes for different activities. A shape I could switch the desks to would be a “U-shape”. The horseshoe shaped desks allows the teacher to walk around to each students individually if help is needed. There is plenty of space behind the desks as well as in front of them allowing the teacher to come from behind the students or stand in the center “u” to show examples. Also, if the teacher is not using the board, he/she can speak closer to the students. The extra space in …show more content…
To make these students comfortable in your classroom, you should have a general understanding of their backgrounds before you meet them. A major detail of having diverse learners in your classroom is planning extra time for certain activities. I believe it is important to not rush your students too much, allowing students to add an extra five minutes to work will help them relax and understand the concept better. Teachers should not stress when students are taking longer on a lesson than …show more content…
This lesson won’t be a game. Partner work is beneficial for young students as long as they follow the class rules of a “turn and talk” activity. The rules in my class for partner work are: turn and look at your partner, listen to their words, when it’s your turn speak so your partner can hear you, turn back to the front of the room, wait quietly for everyone to finish.
Keeping your students excited about learning is important. Having fun activities like a relay race or “turn and talk” breaks up the day and allows the students to unwind while still learning or retaining information.
At the end of the day, the students will pack up their bags and wait patiently for their bus number to be called for dismissal. During this time, students can talk with friends quietly, find a silent reading book and sit in the reading center, or even draw a picture in the art center. As the busses are being called, I will stand at the door with flashcards. On the flashcards will be a sight word, or just a word, when a students’ bus number is called, that student must tell me what the sight word is or tell me how many syllables are in the word. They must answer the question correctly to leave the room. If the student misses three words in a row, they can leave but they have to do it again when they walk into the classroom the next

This design was done on purpose to promote community and closure. Exploring the theory that design is freethinking and has no walls of blockage. The rest of the room is surronded by large panes of glass to let the natural light in. There's usually six large tables in the room with wood surfaces which bear thousands of scratches from students in the past. In a way it's sort of an unofficial signature left behind, with each mark different than the last.…

For decades, the United States has been described as a “melting pot” of different cultures. As the population of the United States increases, factors such socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic diversity continue to grow as well. Multiculturalism can be seen in all aspects of life, including university education. With increasing minority populations at colleges across the nation, an education in diversity becomes more important. Promoting an education in diversity in university life and cultural courses not only discourages students from developing disrespectful preconceptions but also prepares them for the diverse environment of the modern workplace.…

In seventh grade, I found myself thrust into the world of elite, predominantly white private schools. As a person of color coming into this environment, it seemed as if issues regarding racial diversity, religious diversity, socioeconomic status, and even colorism would be inevitable aspects of my experience. Initially, I did not acknowledge the presence of these issues in my new surroundings as they were topics that I had never encountered before and consequently did not fully understand. Slowly, through my personal experiences, I soon realized the relevance of these topics to not only my identity but to the broader community at Brearley. This realization steadily transitioned into a developing interest.…

Through DC Reads, I had the opportunity to interact with socioeconomically diverse communities by tutoring students in Ward 7. This experience made me particularly interested in poverty and segregation issues that affect childhood development, because living in underserved areas of DC takes an unfair toll on some of the motivated students with whom I worked. For example, Ward 7, where I tutored, is a food desert; hence, many of the students do not receive the nutrition that they need to perform well in school. Additionally, transportation into and out of Ward 7 is less than satisfactory, so poorer families struggle to leave the desert. Thus many students are unfortunately put at a disadvantage compared to their peers who are either in close…

ASIAN AMERICANS Cultural and ethnic identity of Asian students may clash with the American school system due to their beliefs that it is important to work together as a group and maintain an allegiance to their family. The American school system tends to give emphasis to individualism and a healthy competition between students. An Asian student will no doubt see that their ability to do well in school as a duty that they have to help maintain the family structure and failure to do well in school can result in stricter parenting styles at home. Asian children are taught from a very early age to respect those in authority, have a sense of responsibility toward their family members, and to maintain self-control.…

My middle school days were not the best; I encountered many instances of bigotry from students. I was teased endlessly and disrespected because of my diversity. One important characteristic as a learner that I have is that I love to talk to people, specifically people that are different than me, that can tell me a different story than what I have heard before. Although my demographic research does not necessarily show how I feel about the lack of diversity, it does show that there was a massive lack of diversity in my high school. Even though there was a lack of diversity, I still found myself interviewing four Korean students. These were possibly the only ones to have a drastically different story than me in my high school. The benefits of that interview have carried with me as shown by the MSLQ.…

Part A For my cultural experience I went to Creekside Manor nursing home in Belews Creek, NC. I’ve lived by this nursing home, along with others, for a while and never even thought to visit. I decided to visit a nursing home because I’ve experienced being the minority in other ways; being in a school with predominately African-Americans and Hispanics, international festivals, a religious congregation differing from my own beliefs and been in situations where my sexuality wasn’t accepted. Out of all the experiences I’ve had visiting a nursing home hasn’t been one.…

The layout starts with the Smart Board located at the front of the class in which each student is able to see. There is also a rug for students to use in which they can sit on and work on the board. The room is arranged to use the Smart Board, but not as a distraction. The students are split up into groups of four, which is good for cooperative learning. There are also centers in which the students will be able to manipulate items and keep them within that area, allowing for organization.…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…

The classroom also had two very large windows looking out onto the playground area, which provided a nice natural light to come into the room. The classroom was tidy and organized with plenty of storage options. It had cubbies along the back wall giving each child a specific area to place his or her belongings. The classroom provided a wall of cabinets and a storage closet to store any materials that did not need to be placed out.
