47 Applies most appropriate therapeutic communication techniques
Therapeutic communication is most important in healthcare “it encourages the expression of feelings and ideas.” Different types of this technique are used in different situations.
One has to be an active listener using both verbal and nonverbal communication. I usually face the client, use eye contact and listen to what they have to say.
I normally share observation like commenting on their looks e.g. I noticed you did not eat today Maria. Or Maria I notice you are biting your nails are worried about something?
Empathy is an understanding the situation making one more objective and care more effective. For example Doris is now clinically blind and feeling sorry for herself. I told her I can understand but there is help she can get from occupational therapy to show her how to cope with ADL. This also gives her hope and encourages her to be positive.
An important therapeutic technique is providing information so that the client can understand. Speaking slowly and clearly in language that is at the client’s level.
