The Butterfly Effect

Choice. This six letter word may seem simple in thought, but it comes with a world of responsibility. Our choices represent a path, and within that path we are given two options;you have the choice to travel down one path, but where it’ll take you is unknown. You may also take another route, which leads you somewhere different. While it may seem simple enough, the choices we make everyday will affect the rest of our lives. From the choice to get up or hit snooze, to deciding between cars – we evaluate our decisions carefully, as our future will be determined by these choices. The choices we make have an explicit impact on our lives, granting us the power to live life according to our own terms, and to create our own

Choices create learning experiences that act as a distinction of who we are and what we will become,on the journey to achieve our greatest potential. They open portals that will lead us to different events and outcomes, each with their own unique story of how you got there. We quickly learn that the outcomes of the decisions we make are solely our responsibility. From a young age I knew that I wanted to help others, and to give back to those in need. My parents made it necessary that we value how privileged we are, and I made the choice to follow in my parents footsteps, and to become socially responsible. My mum always said, “believe in karma; as you sow, so shall you reap”. This formed the person I am today, as I love to help others on a daily basis and spread this message to those close to me. The result of our choices lead us to become responsible and accountable for our actions, creating mature and sensible individuals. Making choices often requires us to think of who this decision will impact. Not only do our choices impact us, but they are also directly related to those around us. Through minor choices such as deciding who to work in a group with, to making a choice of being the designated driver after a night of partying, these actions shape the person we become and are reflective of our values that are embedded within us. They represent the pattern of choices we tend to make, and the emotions associated with those impacted. Choices also have a direct impact on our feelings and the relationships we form over a lifetime. Whether it be acquaintances, a friend, a romantic interest or family, our prior knowledge and exposure to these types of relationships determine our actions. Due to the fact that I was raised in a large family with strong values, I am often described as sociable, family oriented and hope to one day have a large family myself. It is the environment I was surrounded

How do life experiences shape our values? A way life experiences shape our values is when we run away from a problem and later learn something, good or bad, from it. In Tom Sawyer, Tom runs away because he thinks nobody loves him and later learns they do but in their own way. In “Abuela Invents the Zero”, Constancia runs from her grandmother and the fact she is related to her, later she learns she should care about her. An example from my life is when I did something that made my mother scared and I ran inside because I was afraid of getting yelled at, later I knew not to do something like that.…

By looking closer into human life, one can see how fate can play a significant part in how their life is run. Although some people believe that our destiny is in our own hands, I believe that some, if not all parts of our life are pre-determined. In “The Lottery in Babylon,” Luis Borges portrays how fate has an inevitable role in the world through, how the population themselves take actions that will later take control of their lives, the unstoppable growth of the Company, and by the lottery that people are forced to play in. By taking a step back, and actually thinking about the many facets of our life, it becomes clear that fate plays a much bigger role then we would expect. Constantly desiring more, people take actions that leave the…
