College students stress when a new semester starts, this can be a bit overwhelming and rocky for a few weeks until the students become adjusted to the work load. English 114 is a technical writing class that prepares a student for professional communication. The key components for being a successful student in English 114 are to follow the schedule provided and being prompt with turning in assignments, review the information provided by the instructor for guidance on the assignments and complete peer review and major assignments, and to reach out for help when having problems.

As stated in the syllabus provided by the instructor for the English 114 class, the peer review and 4 major assignments range in percentage of the grade for this class from 5% of your grade to 20% (Kouider, 2014). The peer review may only count for 10% of this course but, it allows a student to get critical feedback on major assignments and allow students demonstrate their strengths in another student’s area of weakness (Kouider, 2014). This portion of the course is very important due to the professional world this class is preparing a student for and allows a student to practice the professional communication. As stated my usnews.com, “…most of the work is done outside the classroom…1hour of lecture, 2 hours of preparation time...” this is important in reviewing the information provided by the instructor on the assignments to be completed (Jacobs & Hyman, 2010). While at some colleges there are some professors that do not accept late work, in this class the instructor was very understanding and allowed submission of late work for reduced credit. As stated in the syllabus for this class, “Final drafts of Major Assignments may be submitted late for reduced credit. Your grade will drop a letter grade for every 24 hour period the assignment is late. Short assignments may be made up for half credit only” (Kouider, 2014). Although students should submit work on time to be academically successful in this course the instructor is still willing to be understanding to the issues a student may face. Reaching out to the professor of the course will help in understanding information that a student may not understand as well as allows the professor to understand that the student is committed to their academic
