Every person should have the access to and trust in medicine to see a physician at least once a year. To accomplish this, each person’s uniqueness should be valued and treasured. I strongly believe in preventive medicine, because many health issues stem from improper diet, lack of exercise, stress, alcohol/tobacco/drug use and ignoring medical problems until they become emergencies. As a teacher and mentor at the Academy of 21st Century Learning, I got my first taste of what it means to advocate for someone. When I was leading a summer camp, a student with Asperger’s syndrome was being excluded from his group. He had trouble fitting in with his peers, but he should be allowed the same opportunities regardless of his circumstances. Since this student learned in a slightly different manner than his peers, I modified my curriculum to both allow him to use his strengths to help his team, and to continue providing a fun and challenging education to the rest of the class. By advocating for this student and allowing him to utilize his strengths, this student was able to receive the most out of his time at the
