SAIL Program

The Hames Center will implement the SAIL Program as a regular addition to our permanent schedule. This evidence-based program aligns with the DHSS’s priority to to promote health and wellness across lifespans, as this programs addresses older adults and will benefit family and caregivers. It supports the department 's core service and objective to protect, promote and improve the health status of Alaskans by providing direct health services to the senior population in Sitka, AK.

Services will be administered in three phases: staff training, program implementation and maintenance. The first portion of this phase is to hire two exercises with the criteria defined by The SAIL Program Leader Training Manual. As recommended, one instructor will

Fitness checks consist of three assessments: 8-foot up-and-go, biceps curls, and chair stand. The 8-foot up-and-go, a fast and reliable test, will assess mobility and risk of falling. Biceps Curls will be used to measure arm strength, since arms are used in balance reactions and can help reduce falls. Finally the chair stand will assess leg strength, which is essential for balance, mobility and independence. Days, times, venues and instructors will remain the same unless a change is requested by participants. Marketing will continue in the community on an on-going basis. Evaluations will occur as described in the evaluation plan. Program Coordinator will maintain record upkeep and complete monthly grant reporting. Accountability of SAIL Program Leaders and associated program staff will be maintained and records will be kept to ensure program quality, safety and participant outcomes. Adjustments to program will be made, if necessary, as indicated by evaluation feedback from Program Leaders and participants, and with approval from grantmakers.

Evaluation Plan
Each participant will complete a fitness check, as described above, within two weeks of entering the program and subsequent checks will occur every 3 to 6 months. FItness checks will measure number of seniors who report improved health. Improved health may consist of improved measurements of arm and/or leg strength and improved balanced. Self-reported improvements will also be recorded.

SAIL Fitness Evaluation will be used to ensure consistency of classes and program will be evaluated, as recommended, in 6 month intervals. The Program Coordinator will meet regularly with SAIL Program Leaders to ensure quick resolution of any issue or problems and to share survey results. We will survey class participation to ensure retention, the class and participant benefit survey will be taken
