Importance of physical fitness in cricketers:-
Cricket is multi-stage fitness demanding sport. Players have to spend the most of playing time on his feet. In that also he has to do fast sprint while batting i.e. for running between the wickets, while fielding to chase down a ball & while balling to take run up. Also player has to do various dynamic activities like throwing, turn quickly while running.10 so the agility, speed, power are important factors in cricketers.
Agility- It is the ability to change directions rapidly when moving at high speed. E.g. changing the direction to take multiple runs between the wicket. It also can be termed as quickness in movement which can be in multi-planer or multi-directional.11
Speed- It is the ability to move body mas over time & can be assessed by timed sprints. The ability to accelerate is an important factor in the game. If you achieve maximum speed or acceleration, it will be beneficial for the successful game performance. For the Agility, Illinois test is used, which will assess the change of direction or quickness of players. In this test, players have to run around cones in specifically given direction below. Time taken by the player to complete the test will reflect the agility performance. Less time will indicate excellent agility performance.
40 m dash test is used to assess the speed performance of player. In this test, the player has to run across 40 m as fast as possible. Lesser time will indicate the excellent speed performance. The leg power is assessed by vertical jump test. In this player has to stand beside a wall with the chalk/marker in his hand. He has to mark on the wall with arm reaches up as high as possible. Then he has to jump and again mark on the wall. The value distance between two marks will be indicator for player’s performance.
The press up test is used to test upper body muscular strength and endurance. In this test, player has to do maximum press up in 30 sec. The number of press ups will indicate upper body
