It focuses on being able to identify and manipulate the individual sounds in words. As learners hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds or phonemes in spoken words it helps to improve word reading, reading comprehension and it helps them to learn to spell. A variety of activities can be used to develop phonemic awareness that I would implement when teaching my learners such as being able to identify and categorize phonemes, blend them to form words, segment words into phonemes, delete or add phonemes to form new words, and also to be able to substitute phonemes to make new words. Phonemic awareness education is most effective when children are taught to manipulate phonemes by using the letters of the alphabet and when lessons focuses on only one or two rather than several types of phoneme
