We are all different, and most of the time it is difficult to have a common ground. The individual differences that we have with our coworkers may also lead to miscommunication. Occasionally, it is genuinely crucial to create an environment that has the similar values like our own. This will create barrier to patient’s care. Another challenge that I can see is the challenge of embracing new opportunities. Some nurses resist change. So as an Advanced Practice Nurse, I will serve as an advocate for changes as long as it is beneficial for our nursing practice. Multiculturalism requires us to seek cultural awareness by conducting culturally sensitive assessment holistically combined with respect to patient’s dignity. According to Bacote (2003), multiculturalism in nursing also includes the aspect of caring regardless of the patient’s cultural background, beliefs, and practices. We, as Nurse Practitioners, should be open to suggestions and learnings in order to further enhance our knowledge. Furthermore, multiculturalism involves active listening. It should be done in a non-judgmental way and with compassion. Lastly, multiculturalism should also include closely examining ourselves and our own self reflection of cultural
